CONGRATULATIONS on completing nursing school and embarking on your new career! Saint Francis Health System recruits only the finest healthcare professionals, and becoming part of the Nurse Residency Program is your first step as you transition into a successful nursing career. Every first-time nurse hired at Saint Francis is automatically enrolled in this enriching program.
You are about to experience a big change—your schoolwork is ending, and your official training will soon begin. During your first year as a nurse at Saint Francis, you will take part in the Nurse Residency Program. This program helps you transition from the classroom environment to clinical bedside experiences and real-world professional nursing practice. The Nurse Residency Program consists of an NCLEX® review course, professional nursing orientation, specialty classes and a nurse residency seminar.

The Nurse Residency Program is tailored specifically to the educational needs of newly licensed RNs. Patient safety is our focus at Saint Francis, and the Nurse Residency Program is based upon the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) competencies. During orientation, you will become familiar with our policies, procedures and equipment. Along the way, you will participate in specialty classes specific to the patient population for whom you will be caring (e.g., pediatric, ICU, med/surg, and cardiac classes).
The Nurse Residency Program will also provide you with the knowledge and skills to help you transition to the profession of nursing. Nursing leaders, educators and experts in evidence-based practice will facilitate the interactive nurse residency seminar. You will also have the opportunity to socialize with peers and participate in field experiences with key hospital departments, such as radiology, surgery and respiratory therapy.

Your Nurse Residency Program experience will be individualized by your preceptor, educator and manager. You will work with a professionally prepared preceptor who will guide you on your road to becoming a nurse. Working one-on-one with your preceptor, you will become competent in:

NURSE RESIDENCY ROADMAP
- Week 1: Nursing orientation
- Week 2: Intro to Nurse Residency Class, EPIC classes, and begin precepted unit orientation
- Weeks 3-8: Hemodynamic monitoring, basic dysrhythmia
- Weeks 6-12: Specialty orientation classes
- Months 5-6: Nurse Residency Seminar
- Months 6-12: Professional development activities
- Year 1: Competent, quality, safe, professional nursing practice
